What we do

International Maritime Associates (IMA) was formed in 1973 to provide strategic planning, business development and project implementation support to clients in the marine and offshore sectors.

We provide advisory and support services needed to

identify and evaluate new business opportunities
segment and size the available market
        analyze and profile customer requirements
        assess competitor strengths and vulnerabilities
        evaluate acquisitions and strategic alliances
develop strategy and plan of action for market positioning
        implement the market positioning plan

Our clients include equipment manufacturers, technology firms, financing institutions, transport providers, service companies, facility operators, others.

We have the proven capability to work with a client from concept development through contract closing and project implementation.

Our experience

Over the past 34 years, IMA has completed over 300 business consulting assignments for more than 130 clients in 38 countries.

Many assignments are for repeat clients.  They include more than a dozen assignments for the World Bank, 8 assignments for Siemens and more than 20 for a Japanese client.

Some are long term relationships.  We had an unbroken consulting relationship for more than 20 years with MAN, a major German engineering group.  We have also had multi-year relationships with FMC, McDermott, Saipem, Allis Chalmers, Marinette Marine, Intsok and other companies.

We have had numerous successful projects.  Here are a few examples.

A Lebanese bank asked us to assist in structuring a consortium to bid for a major terminal management contract.  We stuctured the consortium, it won the contract and we played a key role in closing the deal.  Throughput in the terminal has tripled to 1 million TEU since takeover in 2004.

We were engaged by a major US steel company to evaluate a planned shipyard acquisition.  Following evaluation, we recommended against the acquisition.  The CEO wrote to us later to say "this was the best investment made by us this year."

A large manufacturer of heavy machinery asked us to evaluate the potential of entering the slow speed marine diesel market.  We made the evaluation, recommended a strategic alliance and assisted in obtaining the contract for three 44,000 bhp engines.  These were the largest diesel engines built in the U.S.

We assisted a major Japanese company in evaluating the risk associated with taking an equity role in a large FPSO project.  At issue was the potential reuse of the unit when it comes off field. The client proceeded with taking the equity and the production unit is now on field offshore Australia.

We assisted an Italian client in dealing with issues and constraints associated with deploying the S7000 heavylift semisubmersible for the Hoover/Diana Spar installation in the Gulf of Mexico. The installation was successfully completed.
